Having been first noted in ancient Egyptian and Roman times, stained-glass or colored-glass was used to fashion small glass objects such as vases or other artifacts. Later, visible widespread use of stained-glass was developed in the Syrian manufacturing centers of Sidon, Tyre and Antioch mentioned throughout the New Testament of the Bible.

Most of the methods for making stained glass today are the same as the methods used in the Middle Ages. One end of a blow pipe is used to collect a lump of molten glass, then blown into in order to form a cylinder. The cylinder is then cut, flattened and allowed to cool.
